HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY

Hair restoration surgery is used to correct thinning and bald areas of the scalp. Aging, changes in hormone levels, and a family history of baldness are the most common causes of hair loss. Certain medications, burns, and injury can also induce hair loss. Hair restoration surgery is the process of taking tiny "grafts" of hair bearing skin from the back of the head and planting these grafts into the bald or thin areas. Hundreds, or even thousands of grafts later, the treated areas are ready to produce a covering coat of new hair.

Hair restoration surgery typically spans three to five hours. The length of time to perform the procedure varies depending on the number of grafts planted. The procedure is performed using local anesthesia with Valium as a sedative.

Patients have traditionally been reluctant to investigate hair restoration surgery because of preconceived notions concerning "corn row" and "doll's hair" results. Problems like these, which were associated with older, antiquated techniques, are never seen with modern surgical techniques. Prospective patients need not think that they are destined to be unhappy with hair restoration surgery. Our office uses special microscopes to dissect the skin into tiny "micrografts". These micrografts most closely resemble the scalp's natural follicular groupings and result in a virtually undetectable transplant.
