The ideal appearance of the ears is to have them positioned close to the side of the head. Protruding ears often provoke teasing by children and make adults appear less sophisticated and professional. Classroom teasing can be avoided by having corrective surgery around the age of seven, but it is never too late to have otoplasty surgery performed. In younger children, a general anesthetic is often used. In adults, IV anesthesia is adequate. A turban-type bandage is used for a few days after surgery.
Most patients can return to a normal routine in one week. Children will have gymnasium and sports limitations for two or three weeks.
