Through the ages, as depicted in artwork, a strong chin has been considered a feature of physical beauty and character. A person with a receding chin has often been stigmatized as having a "weak" chin. Because the face requires balance to appear attractive, people with a weak chin often find it a source of distress. Chin augmentation, or mentoplasty, is a surgical procedure that improves the balance of facial features by altering the contours of the jaw. The chin implant procedure can lengthen a small chin or redefine a sagging chin. In some cases, a chin augmentation is done in conjunction with liposuction of the neck to rejuvenate the lower face and neck. For many patients, chin augmentation is combined with cosmetic nose surgery. The nose and chin are complimentary facial features that look best when properly balanced.
